Enter the observations

Select the option that best describes your data.

All observations are in one column

If your data are in a single column of the worksheet, complete the following steps.
  1. From the drop-down list, select All observations are in one column.
  2. In the box that is under the drop-down list, enter the column that contains the observations.
  3. In Subgroup size, enter a column that identifies the subgroup for each measurement or enter a number that indicates the subgroup size. Enter a number only if all of the subgroups are the same size. For example, if every subgroup contains measurements for five items, enter 5. If you enter a column of subgroup IDs, the subgroup sizes do not need to be equal.
    Note

    If you collect data as individual observations, the subgroup size is 1.

In this worksheet, the Diameter column contains the diameters of the piston rings. The Subgroup ID column identifies the subgroup for each measurement.

Observations for a subgroup are in one row of columns

If you have subgroups arranged in rows across several columns of the worksheet, and each row represents a single subgroup, complete the following steps.
  1. From the drop-down list, select Observations for a subgroup are in one row of columns.
  2. In the box that is under the drop-down list, enter the columns that contain the observations.
In this worksheet, the first row of the worksheet contains the diameters of the piston rings in subgroup 1. The second row of the worksheet contains the diameters of the piston rings in subgroup 2, and so on.

Enter the demographics

Select the option that describes how you want to enter demographic data.

Enter process demographics data individually

Enter the demographics data in the Demographics sub-dialog box. For more information, go to Enter the demographics data for Process Report.

Obtain demographics data from a column in worksheet

Enter the demographics data in your worksheet.
  1. From the drop-down list, select Obtain demographics data from a column in worksheet.
  2. In the box that is under the drop-down list, enter the column of demographics data.
Structure the demographics data as shown in the following worksheet.
C1 contains the output labels. C2 contains the demographic information.

Tip

You can store this worksheet as a template for new worksheets. Then, you will only need to change the values in C2.

Enter the specification limits

If you enter your demographics data in the Demographics sub-dialog box, you must also enter your specification limits in the dialog box. If you enter your demographics data in a worksheet column, you must also enter your specification limits in the worksheet column.
Enter process demographics data individually
  1. From the drop-down list, select Enter process demographics data individually.
  2. In Lower Spec and Upper Spec, enter the lower and upper specifications. If it is not possible for measurements to fall outside of the specification limit, select Boundary.
  3. (Optional) In Target, enter the target or nominal specification. The target value must be between the lower and upper specifications.
Obtain demographics data from a column in worksheet
  1. From the drop-down list, select Obtain demographics data from a column in worksheet.
  2. In the box that is under the drop-down list, enter the column that contains the demographic data.
  3. If it is not possible for measurements to fall below this value, select Lower spec is the lower bound. If it is not possible for measurements to exceed this value, select Upper spec is the upper bound.
Note

When you have a single specification that is a hard limit, or when you have two specifications that are both hard limits, Minitab does not calculate Z statistics or process capability statistics. Also, when all your units are defects, Minitab does not calculate Z statistics.
