Overview for 1 Variance

Use 1 Variance to estimate either the variance or the standard deviation of a population and to compare that value to a target value or a reference value. Using this analysis, you can do the following:
  • Determine whether the population variance or the standard deviation differs from the hypothesized value that you specify.
  • Calculate a range of values that is likely to include the population variance or population standard deviation.

For example, a quality analyst uses a 1 variance test to determine whether the variance of the moisture content in a shipment of unprocessed lumber is too high. If the variance is greater than the maximum acceptable variance, the analyst uses the confidence interval to determine how large the difference is likely to be and whether that difference has practical significance.
