Which capability analyses are included in Minitab?

Minitab offers many capability analyses to evaluate whether your process meets customer requirements. Analyses are appropriate for either continuous data or attribute data. For information on these types of data, go to Data types for capability analysis.

Capability analyses for continuous data from a normal distribution

Use the following analyses when you have normal data or want to transform nonnormal data to fit a normal distribution. These analyses calculate both the potential (within) and actual (overall) capability of your process.

Normal Capability Analysis

To assess the capability of your process, use a capability analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Normal.

Normal Capability Analysis for Multiple Variables

To assess the capability of your process and also compare the capability of multiple process variables (or one variable that has grouping information), use a capability analysis for multiple variables. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Multiple Variables (Normal).

Between/Within Capability Analysis

To assess the capability of your process, such as a batch process that produces large variation between subgroups, use a between/within capability analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Between/Within.

Normal Capability Sixpack

To assess the assumptions of a normal capability analysis and evaluate only the major capability indices, use a capability Sixpack analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Sixpack > Normal.

Between/Within Capability Sixpack

To assess the assumptions of a between/within capability analysis and evaluate only the major capability indices, use a capability Sixpack analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Sixpack > Between/Within.

Capability analyses for continuous data that are not from a normal distribution

Use the following analyses to perform a capability analysis that does not use the normal distribution to model your process data. These analyses evaluate the overall capability of your process but do not include indices for potential (within) capability.

Nonnormal Capability Analysis

To choose the nonnormal distribution that best fits the data and assess the capability of your process, use a capability analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Nonnormal.

Nonnormal Capability Analysis for Multiple Variables

To assess the capability of your process with a nonnormal distribution and also compare the capability of multiple process variables (or one variable that has grouping information), use a capability analysis for multiple variables. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Multiple Variables (Nonnormal).

Nonnormal Capability Sixpack

To assess the assumptions of a nonnormal capability analysis and evaluate only the major capability indices, use a capability Sixpack analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Sixpack > Nonnormal.

Nonparametric Capability Analysis

To assess the capability of your process with no assumptions about the distribution of the data, use a nonparametric capability analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Nonparametric.

Capability analyses for attribute data

Use one of the following analyses to evaluate the capability of a process that produces attribute data.

Binomial capability analysis

To determine whether the percentage of defective items meets customer requirements, use a binomial capability analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Binomial.

Poisson capability analysis

To determine whether the rate of defects per unit (DPU) meets customer requirements, use a Poisson capability analysis. In Minitab, choose Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis > Poisson.
