Summarized data

Complete the following steps if you have observed counts that are summarized by category.
  1. Select Observed counts, and enter the column that contains the counts of each category.
  2. (Optional) In Category names (optional), enter the column that contains the category names, if you have them.
In this worksheet, Counts contain the summarized counts of a sample of t-shirts by color. Color contains the category names that represent each t-shirt color.

Categorical data in a column

Select Categorical data, and enter the column that contains the raw categorical data.
In this worksheet, Color contains the categorical data. Each row represents a single observation of the color of each t-shirt in the sample.

Specify the test

Select the option that best describes what you want to test.

Equal proportions

Under Test, select Equal proportions to determine whether the proportions in each category are the same. For example, if your data include 3 categories, Minitab tests whether the proportion of each category is 0.33333, or 33.333%.

Specific proportions

Complete the following steps to specify different proportions for each category.
  1. Under Test, select Specific proportions.
    Minitab shows the categories from your worksheet.
  2. From the drop-down list, select one of the following options:
    • Input column: Use when you have proportions for each category stored in a column.
    • Input constants: Use when you want to type the proportions for each category into the dialog.
  3. Depending on your choice in step #2, either enter the column that contains the proportions, or enter each proportion in the dialog box.

Proportions specified by historical counts

Complete the following steps to specify the test proportions by historical counts.
  1. Under Test, select Proportions specified by historical counts.
  2. From the drop-down list, select one of the following options:
    • Input column: Use when you have historical counts for each category stored in a column.
    • Input constants: Use when you want to type the historical counts for each category into the dialog.
  3. Depending on your choice in step #2, either enter the column that contains the historical counts, or enter each historical constant in the dialog box.
