Overview for Simple Correspondence Analysis

Use Simple Correspondence Analysis to explore relationships in a two-way classification. This procedure decomposes a contingency table in a manner similar to how principal components analysis decomposes multivariate continuous data. An eigen analysis of the data is performed, and the variability is broken down into underlying dimensions and associated with rows and/or columns. Using this analysis, you can create graphs to visually represent row and column points and examine overall structural relationships among the variable categories.

For example, researchers use simple correspondence analysis to determine how ten academic disciplines compare to each other relative to five different funding categories.

Where to find this analysis

To perform a simple correspondence analysis, choose Stat > Multivariate > Simple Correspondence Analysis.

When to use an alternate analysis

You can use this analysis with 2, 3 or 4 categorical variables. If you have 5 or more categorical variables, use Multiple Correspondence Analysis.
