Overview for Item Analysis

Use Item Analysis to assess how well multiple items in a survey or test measure the same characteristic. Using this analysis, you can do the following:

  • Assess the strength and direction of the relationship between pairs of items.
  • Evaluate the overall internal consistency of the test or survey.
  • Determine whether omitting items improves the internal consistency.

For example, a customer relations manager for a chain of restaurants uses an item analysis to assess the questions in a customer satisfaction survey. The manager wants to ensure that the questions consistently measure customer satisfaction.
