When you open a file, the file's contents are copied into the project. Therefore, if you change the data or graph contents within a project, you do not affect the original file.
You can open files from an online repository, such as Microsoft OneDrive® and Google Drive™, in both the desktop and web app.
In the desktop app, Open from repository for Google Drive™ will be disabled on April 21, 2026 due to a change in Google's authentication workflow. You can still access files in Google Drive™ in the Minitab web app, and if you want to use the desktop app, simply select Open in Desktop App.
If the Excel file contains multiple sheets, you can control the import of each sheet separately.
In the web app, you cannot open XLS and XML files.
To change the default settings for importing files, choose .
Minitab can open plain text (ANSI or Unicode) files, which have an extension of .txt (text), .dat (data), or .csv (comma separated values). If the data that you want to use are in a file with an extension that is not in the drop-down list, try saving the data as a text file and then importing it. Most applications can create text files.

To open a Minitab project file (MPX, MPJ) or worksheet file (MWX, MTW), choose and browse to and select the file.

With the release of Minitab 19 and tabbed output, Minitab saves projects as MPX files and worksheets as MWX files. You cannot open MPX or MWX files in versions of Minitab that do not support tabbed output. You can open a project (MPJ) or a worksheet (MTW) from Minitab versions 16, 17, and 18.
