Specify further design information for Define Custom Split-Plot Design

You can specify the design columns that are already in the worksheet. If you do not have columns that contain the design information, then Minitab creates new columns.

Standard Order Column
If you do not specify a column, then Minitab creates a column that is the row order of the data. Standard order is also called Yates' order.
  • Order of the data: Select this option if no standard order column is in the worksheet or if the standard order is the order in the worksheet.
  • Specify by column: Select this option if the worksheet contains a column that identifies the standard order of the experimental runs.
Run Order Column
If you do not specify a column, then Minitab creates a column that is the row order of the data.
  • Order of the data: Select this option if no run order column is in the worksheet or if the experimental runs are in the order that they should be done.
  • Specify by column: Select this option if a column in the worksheet identifies the order that the experimental runs should be done.
Point Type Column
For a split-plot design, Minitab Statistical Software does not use the point type column in the analysis of the design. If you do not have a point type column, Minitab Statistical Software creates a column with 1 in every row.
  • Unknown: Select this option unless a point type column exists for a design that Minitab Statistical Software created.
  • Specify by column: Select this option if a point type column exists for a design that Minitab Statistical Software created.
Blocks
If you specify a column with multiple values, Minitab Statistical Software can include a term for blocks in the model. If you do not specify a column, then Minitab creates a column with 1 in every row. You can directly edit this new column to identify blocks after you define the design
  • No blocks: Select this option if no block column is in the worksheet or if the design has no blocks.
  • Specify by column: Select this option if a column in the worksheet identifies which runs are in each block.
Whole plot ID column
If you do not specify a column, then you must specify a whole plot size.
  • Specify by column: Select this option if you have a column that identifies which runs are in the same whole plot.
  • Whole plot size: Select this option if no column is in the worksheet. Minitab creates a new column that puts that many consecutive rows in the same whole plot.
In this worksheet, these columns provide more information about the design:
  • Standard Order: This column contains the standard order of the design.
  • Run Order: This column contains the order that the experimental runs should be done. In this worksheet, the order of the factor settings is randomized so the run order does not match the standard order.
  • Point Type: This column contains a 1 in every row.
  • Blocks: This column has 1 for the first block and 2 for the second block with respect to the standard order of the design. Because blocks are randomized, 2 precedes 1 in run order. All runs for the same block are contiguous in run order.
  • Whole Plots: This column identifies experimental runs that are in the same whole plot. In this worksheet, whole plots are built from the levels of Pretreatment. When Pretreatment changes, a new whole plot begins. To get the correct analysis, you could also specify that the size of the whole plots is 2.
