Specify the data for your analysis and enter the tolerance range or a single specification.

Enter your data

Complete the following steps to specify the measurement data and the reference value.

  1. In Measurement data, enter the column that contains the observed measurements for a single part. Minitab requires at least 10 observations to perform this analysis. However, you should have at least 50 observations for an adequate study.
  2. In Reference, enter the known measurement for the single reference part. Ideally, this value is close to the center of the tolerance range for the characteristic that you measure.
In this worksheet, Diameter contains the measurements of the outer diameter of the shaft of a reference electrode.

Tolerance

You must specify either the tolerance range or a single specification. The process tolerance is the amount of variation that a part can have and still meet the customer's requirements. Specifically, process tolerance is the difference between the upper specification and the lower specification.
  • Upper spec - lower spec: Enter the difference between the specification limits. This is also known as the tolerance range. For example, if the upper specification is 0.36 mm and the lower specification is 0.34 mm, the process tolerance is 0.02 mm.
  • Lower spec only: Enter the lower specification limit. Ideally, no measurements are less than this value.
  • Upper spec only: Enter the upper specification limit. Ideally, no measurements are greater than this value.
Note

If you want Minitab to calculate capability indices, you must enter a tolerance range rather than a single specification limit.
