Specify the worksheets to merge

When you open the merge worksheets dialog box, the active worksheet name is displayed beside Merge. The active worksheet is always one of the worksheets to be merged.

  1. From With, select a worksheet to merge with the active worksheet.
  2. In Output worksheet name, enter a name for the new worksheet.

Specify the columns to use to match observations

You can specify the columns to use to match observations. Minitab matches the values in these columns from each worksheet and puts the values in ascending order. The other columns are sorted according to the specified columns, so that each row of the merged worksheet contains information for the same group. You also can specify whether to include multiple observations, unmatched observations, and missing observations in the merged worksheet.

For more information, go to How to set up By Columns for Merge Worksheets: Match Values.

  1. Click By Columns.
  2. From Available columns, select one column from each worksheet.
Values in the By Columns from each worksheet are matched so that each row of the merged worksheet contains information for the same value from the By Columns.
  3. Click the right arrow to move the selected columns to By Columns.
  4. To include the values that are repeated in the By Column for a worksheet, select Include multiple obs for that worksheet.
  5. To include the rows from the worksheet that do not have matching By Column values in the other worksheet, select Include unmatched obs for the worksheet.
  6. To include rows that contain missing values in either of the By Columns, select Include missing as a By level.
The missing observations are treated as distinct values. Missing By Column values from both worksheets are matched.

Specify the columns to include or exclude

You can specify the columns to be included or excluded in the merged worksheet.

  1. From the main dialog box, click Include Columns.
  2. Select one or more columns and click the arrows to move the selected columns to either Include Columns or Exclude Columns.
