Commonly asked questions about Minitab Simul8® Architecture

From version 30 (2023) and later, Simul8 is available as a 64-bit application in addition to the 32-bit version. See below for some commonly asked questions.

How do I install 64-bit Simul8?

From version 30 onwards, the installer defaults to 64-bit. This applies if you install Simul8 for the first time or if you are upgrading. The installer will have an option to install in 32-bit if required.

How can I access the version 30 installer?

Contact Minitab to check if you are already eligible for the upgrade.

What is the difference between 64 and 32-bit?

Your computer will have either a 64 or 32-bit processor, which refers to the amount of data it can handle. A 64-bit operating system can run both 64 and 32-bit applications. However, a 32-bit operating system cannot run 64-bit applications. Offering both versions allows you to select the version most suitable for your system and any external applications you wish to use with Simul8. To check your version of Simul8, go to File > About.

What is available in 64-bit that is not available in 32-bit?

Building Simul8 in 64-bit opens up more options to our developers. For example, in version 30, the internal spreadsheets have been updated and include more features, such as improved editing functions.

What are compatiblity implications?

Many other software packages are currently available in both 32 and 64-bit versions, including Excel and Python. 32-bit Simul8 was not compatible with the 64-bit version of these applications. From version 30 and later, Simul8 is compatible with these versions and any other 64-bit software.

Database connections

If you use 32-bit Simul8, you do not need to change to how you set up or open an existing SQL connection.

To create a new SQL connection in 64-bit Simul8, use the same process as 32-bit. Simply select the 64-bit ODBC to create the DSN. If you want to use 64-bit Simul8 to open SQL connection that was created in 32-bit Simul8, you need to set up a new 64-bit DSN.

See SQL for more information about how to set up a database connection.
