Overview for Chi-Square Goodness-of-Fit Test

Use Chi-Square Goodness-of-Fit Test to determine whether the proportion of items in each category is significantly different from the proportions that you specify. You can test whether the proportions are equal across the categories (uniform), specify a different proportion for each category, or specify historical counts for each category.

For example, a researcher wants to determine whether the sample proportions of people who prefer certain colors of shoes match the values in the following table.

Proportion	Color
0.2	White
0.3	Black
0.4	Blue
0.1	Any other color

To perform a chi-square goodness-of-fit test, choose Stat > Tables > Chi-Square Goodness-of-Fit Test (One Variable).

When to use an alternate analysis

If you want to determine whether the distribution of observations for one variable differs depending on the category of the second variable, use Cross Tabulation and Chi-Square.
