Example of Sample from Columns

A researcher has ten applicants for an experiment but needs only five applicants. The researcher uses random sample to randomly select five of the applicants.

  1. In the column name cell of an empty worksheet column, type Name.
  2. Copy and paste, or type the following data into the Name column:
    Amal
    Ana
    Chloe
    Fin
    Joon
    Jordon
    Luis
    Michael
    Sam
    Sarah
    Tip

    To get the same sample as in the table below, set the random generator base before you generate the random sample. Choose Calc > Set Base and enter 1.

  3. Choose Calc > Random Data > Sample From Columns.
  4. In Number of rows to sample, enter 5.
  5. In From columns, enter Name.
  6. In Store samples in, enter 'Sample From Name'.
  7. Click OK.

Results

The first column contains all 10 applicants. The second column contains the random sample of five applicants. The researcher can record the results of the experiment in the corresponding rows of another column.
