Overview for 2-Sample t

Use 2-Sample t to do the following:
  • Determine whether the population means of two independent groups differ.
  • Calculate a range of values that is likely to include the difference between the population means.

For example, a healthcare consultant wants to compare the patient satisfaction ratings of two hospitals. If the means from the two hospitals are different, the consultant uses the confidence interval to determine whether the difference is practically significant.

Where to find this analysis

To perform a 2-sample t-test, choose Stat > Basic Statistics > 2-Sample t.

When to use an alternate analysis

If you have paired or dependent data, such as measurements of a bearing taken with two different calipers, use Paired t instead. For more information, go to How are dependent and independent samples different?.
