Formatting cells that contain the highest or lowest values

You can format cells that contain the highest or lowest values in the column by rank or by percentage.

Highest values

Use this option to format the cells that contain the highest values in the column by rank.

The observations in the column are ranked from highest (largest) to lowest (smallest), and the format is applied to the cells that contain the highest X observations, where X is the specified rank. If the Xth observation is tied with other values, then the format is applied to all cells that contain that value.

  1. Do one of the following to open the dialog box:
    • Choose Data > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Highest Values.
    • Click in the column, then choose Editor > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Highest Values.
    • Click in the column, right-click, then choose Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Highest Values.
  2. In Column, enter the column to apply the conditional formatting to. This option appears only if you opened the dialog box from the Data menu.
  3. In Format cells that rank in the highest, select a rank.
  4. From Style, select the format for the cells that meet the condition.
  5. If you selected Custom for the style, select a Background color, a Font Color, and a Font Style for the cell formatting.

Highest percentage

Use this option to format the cells that contain the highest values in the column by percentage.

The observations in the column are ranked from highest (largest) to lowest (smallest), and the format is applied to the cells that contain the highest X% of the observations, where X is the specified percentage. If X% of the observations is not an integer, then Minitab rounds down. For example, if the column contains 10 observations and you specify 33%, then the format is applied to the cells that contain the highest 3 observations. If the X% observation is a tie, then the format is applied to all cells that contain that value.

  1. Do one of the following to open the dialog box:
    • Choose Data > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Highest Percentage.
    • Click in the column, then choose Editor > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Highest Percentage.
    • Click in the column, right-click, then choose Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Highest Percentage.
  2. In Column, enter the column to apply the conditional formatting to. This option appears only if you opened the dialog box from the Data menu.
  3. In Percent, select a percentage.
  4. From Style, select the format for the cells that meet the condition.
  5. If you selected Custom for the style, select a Background color, a Font Color, and a Font Style for the cell formatting.

Lowest values

Use this option to format the cells that contain the lowest values in the column by rank.

The values in the column are ranked from lowest (smallest) to highest (largest), and the format is applied to the lowest X observations, where X is the specified rank. If the Xth observation is a tie, then the format is applied to all cells that contain that value.

  1. Do one of the following to open the dialog box:
    • Choose Data > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Lowest Values.
    • Click in the column, then choose Editor > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Lowest Values.
    • Click in the column, right-click, then choose Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Lowest Values.
  2. In Column, enter the column to apply the conditional formatting to. This option appears only if you opened the dialog box from the Data menu.
  3. In Format cells that rank in the lowest, select a rank.
  4. From Style, select the format for the cells that meet the condition.
  5. If you selected Custom for the style, select a Background color, a Font Color, and a Font Style for the cell formatting.

Lowest percentage

Use this option to format the cells that contain the lowest values in the column by percentage.

The observations in the column are ranked from lowest (smallest) to highest (largest), and the format is applied to the cells that contain the lowest X% of the observations, where X is the specified percentage. If X% of the observations is not an integer, then Minitab rounds down. For example, if the column contains 10 observations and you specify 33%, then the format is applied to the cells that contain the lowest 3 observations. If the X% observation is a tie, then the format is applied to all cells that contain that value.

  1. Do one of the following to open the dialog box:
    • Choose Data > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Lowest Percentage.
    • Click in the column, then choose Editor > Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Lowest Percentage.
    • Click in the column, right-click, then choose Conditional Formatting > High/Low > Lowest Percentage.
