Minitab Connect Integration

Use the Minitab Connect integration to import prepared data from Connect into Simul8 internal spreadsheets.

The Minitab Connect integration lets you import governed, refreshable, and prepared data directly from Minitab Connect into Minitab Simul8. This reduces repetitive data preparation, making it faster and easier to keep your simulations up to date with the latest trusted data.

Use the integration to run simulations with updated operational data, such as current order volumes, staffing levels, demand data, or process performance measures. After you set up a connection, you can refresh the data in your simulation without manually reformatting or reimporting files.

Set up a connection to Minitab Connect

  1. In Simul8, go to the Integrate tab and select Connections .
  2. Enter your API Key from Minitab Connect. To access an API key, go to Generate an API token.
  3. To save an encrypted version of your API key, select Remember API key securely.
    Note

The saved key lets you reopen this file on this device without setting up the connection again. To protect your data, you must re-enter the API key if a different user opens the file or if the file is opened on another device.

  4. Select Validate.

Import and export data

After you validate the connection to your Minitab Connect account, you can set up your data connections.

  1. In Simul8, go to the Integrate tab and select Connections .
  2. In the Configure Connections dialog, select the Data tab and select Add Connection.
  3. In the Connection Properties dialog, enter a name for the connection.
  4. From Available Tables and Views, select a table or a view from the pre-populated list of options from your Minitab Connect account.
    • To import data, you can only select a table or a view.
    • To export data, you can select only a table.
  5. Set the Data Flow direction. For example, the connection might import data from Minitab Connect to Simul8 or the connection might export data from Simul8 to Minitab Connect.
  6. Under Internal Spreadsheet Settings, select an internal spreadsheet or create a new one.
    • If you are importing data, choose the spreadsheet that serves as the target for the imported data.
    • If you are exporting data, choose the spreadsheet that contains the data to export.
  7. When you import data from Minitab Connect, select Clear Internal Spreadsheet before import to remove existing data from the Simul8 spreadsheet before importing the new data.
  8. When you export data to Minitab Connect, you can select any or all of the following settings:
Clear Minitab Connect® Table before import
Select to remove existing data from the table in Minitab Connect before importing the new data from Simul8.
Do not export header row to Minitab Connect® Table
Select if you already have a title row in your Minitab Connect table and do not want to overwrite it.
Add new columns to Minitab Connect® Table
Select if your Simul8 data contains more columns than your Minitab Connect table and you want to add the additional columns. If you do not select this setting, additional data columns are ignored.
  9. Select OK.

From the Data tab on the Configure Connections dialog, you can set up as many connections between Minitab Connect and Simul8 as you need. To edit an existing connection, select it, then select Properties. You can also erase, copy, and enable connections as needed.

Transfer data

After you set up your connections, you can transfer data between Minitab Connect and Simul8 in several ways.
  • To run individual connections, go to the Integrate tab and select Connections. From the Configure Connections dialog, go to the Data tab. Select the connection to run and select Transfer Data.
  • To import all of your enabled connections, go to the Integrate tab and select Refresh Data.
  • To export all your enabled connections, go to the Integrate tab and select Publish to Dashboard.
  • To automate the import and export of your connections, you can use Visual Logic. For example, you can use Visual Logic commands to refresh all data when you reset the simulation and start all exports at the end of your simulation run.

Use Visual Logic commands to automate connections

You can use the following Visual Logic commands to control the Minitab Connect integration and automate the import and export process.
Import All Minitab Connect Links
Imports all enabled Minitab Connect links.
Export All Minitab Connect Links
Exports all enabled Minitab Connect links.
Refresh Minitab Connect Link
Refreshes a Minitab Connect link by importing or exporting its associated data.
Parameter: Link Name—The name of the Minitab Connect link to be refreshed.
Refresh All Minitab Connect Links
Imports and exports all enabled Minitab Connect links.
