Pause or cancel an active project

Only a data architect or a steering committee member can pause or cancel a project in the Active stage.

Pause a project

Pause a project when you anticipate temporary delays but expect the project to resume eventually. For example, if a project owner is taking a vacation or attending to other priorities, you might pause the project until it can be reassigned.

When you pause an active project, Engage notifies the project owner, the review board members, and any task assignees of the project’s new status. Any date-based notifications are paused while the project is paused.

  1. In the web app, on the Workflow page, select Active.
  2. In the list of projects, next to the name of the project to pause, select expand .
  3. Select Pause.
  4. Enter a reason for the pause, then select Pause. Engage saves this reason, who paused it, and when.

Cancel a project

Cancel a project when priorities shift and the project will not likely resume. For example, if the project does not align with your company’s new goals or it exceeds its budget, you might cancel the project.

When you cancel an active project, Engage notifies the project owner, the review board members, and any task assignees of the project’s new status. Any date-based notifications are stopped while the project is canceled.

  1. In the web app, on the Workflow page, select Active.
  2. In the list of projects, next to the name of the project to cancel, select expand .
  3. Select Cancel.
  4. Enter a reason for the cancellation, then select Cancel Project. Engage saves this reason, who canceled it, and when. Only the latest cancellation reason is retained.

Resume a project

When you resume a paused or canceled project, it returns to the same phase it was in when it was paused or canceled, with the same phase dates, project data, tasks, team members, and so on, unless the project was edited by a steering committee member. Engage notifies the project owner, the review board members, and any task assignees of the project’s new status.

  1. In the web app, on the Workflow page, select Paused or Canceled.
  2. In the list of projects, next to the name of the project to resume, select expand .
  3. Select Resume.
  4. Enter a reason for resuming the project, then select Resume. Engage saves this reason, who resumed it, and when.
Engage uses the resume date and the pause date to calculate Pause Duration, which is used in the formula fields Paused Duration and Duration (Less Days Paused). You can use these formula fields in dashboard reports to account for legitimate project delays. For more information, go to Create a report.
