House of Quality Matrices

With a QFD Project, you can use the House of Quality matrices to assess customer requirements. The House of Quality matrices examine the phases of product development from customer requirements to assembly. For more information, go to Add and complete a form.

House of Quality Matrix 1

Use the House of Quality Matrix 1 to evaluate the relationship between customer requirements and performance criteria.

The House of Quality Matrix 1 answers the following questions.
  • What is the relationship between customer requirements and performance criteria?
  • How well do your products meet the needs of your customers?
  • How do your products compare with the products of your competitors?

How-to

This form uses the customer requirements from the Pairwise Comparison Matrix.

As a cross-functional team, complete the following steps.
  1. Add columns to the matrix to create a list of performance criteria that define the product or service. The criteria should be top-level, solution-independent measurements or metrics.
  2. Rate the strength of the relationship between each performance criterion and each customer requirement. Blank is none, 1 is weak, 3 is moderate, and 9 is strong.
  3. Rate the level of technical difficulty for each performance criterion.
  4. Rate how well your competitors' products or services meet a specific requirement.

    The Performance Criteria Interactions Table, also called the technical correlation matrix, is the roof on a traditional House of Quality.

  5. Complete the House of Quality Matrix 2.

House of Quality Matrix 2

Use the House of Quality Matrix 2 to evaluate the relationship between performance criteria and design parameters.

The House of Quality Matrix 2 answers the following questions.
  • What is the relationship between performance criteria and design parameters?
  • How well do your products or services meet the customer's needs?
  • How does your product compare to your competitors' products?

This form uses the performance criteria from the House of Quality Matrix 1.

As a cross-functional team, complete the following steps.
  1. Add columns to the matrix to create a list of design parameters that define the product or service.
  2. Evaluate the relationship between each design parameter and each performance criterion. Blank is none, 1 is weak, 3 is moderate, and 9 is strong.

  5. You can assign the design parameters to the functional areas that you define.

  • What is the relationship between design parameters and process parameters?
  • How well do your products or services meet the customer's needs?

  4. You can assign the process parameter to the functional areas that you define.
