Make a variable from a shape

You can make an X variable or a Y variable from a shape on a brainstorm diagram, then select it in maps and forms.
  1. On a brainstorm diagram, select a shape, then choose Brainstorm > Make X Variable or Make Y Variable.
  2. If the Make Variable dialog box appears, select OK. Engage makes a copy of the affinity, sibling, or child as an unmapped variable. An unmapped variable is one that is not assigned to a shape on a process map.

After you make a variable from a shape in a brainstorm diagram, you can select it in process maps and in forms.

To select a variable in a process map, complete the following steps.
  1. In a process map, select the shape to assign the variable to.
  2. In the process map task pane, on the Variables tab, select Move or Copy.
  3. In the Data Selection dialog box, select the variables to add to the shape, then select OK.
To select a variable in a form, the form must contain a data-entry table that is shared with the X variable or the Y variable categories. Then, complete the following steps.
  1. Hold the pointer over a table row or column, and when the add button appears, select Select Existing X Variables or Select Existing Y Variables.
  2. In the Data Selection dialog box, select the variables to add, then select OK.
