Raw data (categorical variables)

Complete the following steps if the categorical data are entered as individual observations in the worksheet.

  1. From the data drop-down list, select Raw data (categorical variables).
  2. In Rows, enter the columns that contain the categories that define the rows of the table.
  3. In Columns, enter the columns that contain the categories that define the columns of the table.
  4. In Layers, enter the columns that contains the categories that define the layers of two-way tables. Minitab creates separate two-way tables for each level of the layering variable.
  5. (Optional) In Frequencies, enter the columns that contains the frequency counts.

For more information on table layouts, go to Arrangement of output tables.

In this worksheet, Gender contains the Male and Female categories, which are the rows in the table. Smokes contains Yes and No, which are the columns of the table. Activity contains the layering variable. Minitab creates separate tables for Moderate, Slight, and A lot.
C1-T C2-T C3-T
Gender Smokes Activity
Male No Moderate
Female No Moderate
Male Yes Slight
Male Yes A lot
In this worksheet, Gender contains the row variable, Smokes contains the column variable, Activity contains the layering variable, and Count contains the frequency data.
C1-T C2-T C3-T C4
Gender Smokes Activity Count
Male No Moderate 12
Female No Moderate 15
Male Yes Moderate 4
Female Yes Moderate 5

Summarized data in a two-way table

Complete the following steps if you have summarized, observed counts for the categorical data.

  1. From the data drop-down list, select Summarized data in a two-way table.
  2. In Columns containing the table, enter the columns that contain the summarized counts.
  3. Under Labels for the table (optional), specify the row and column labels.
    • In Rows, enter the column that contains the labels for the row variable. The name of this column becomes the name of the row variable.
    • In Columns, type the name of the column variable.
In this worksheet, 1st shift, 2nd shift, and 3rd shift are the table of columns that contain the counts of rejected products for each work shift. Machine ID is the column of row labels and indicates which machine manufactured the rejected products.
C1 C2 C3 C4
Machine ID 1st shift 2nd shift 3rd shift
1 48 47 48
2 76 47 32
3 36 40 34
