Example of Standardize

A materials engineer at a furniture manufacturing site wants to assess the stiffness of the particle board that the manufacturer uses. The engineer collects stiffness data from particle board pieces that have various densities at different temperatures.

To compare the temperature and density on the same scale and with the same center, the engineer standardizes these variables.

Open the sample data, ParticleBoard.MTW.
Choose Calc > Standardize.
In Input column(s), enter Density Temp.
In Store results in, type 'Std Density' 'Std Temp'.
Select Subtract mean and divide by standard deviation.
Click OK.

Results

The standardized columns are in the worksheet. The engineer can compare the standardized density and temperature on the same scale with the same center.
