About backup files

To prevent you from losing data if a project file becomes corrupted, Minitab automatically saves a single backup copy of each project you open. The backup file has a .BAK extension and is in the same folder as the original file. For example, if you save a project file named DEFECTS.MPJ in C:\MY FILES, Minitab automatically creates a backup file called DEFECTS.MPJ.BAK in C:\MY FILES.

Open a backup file

The backup file contains the contents of the project as they were the last time you opened the project successfully.

  1. Choose File > Open.
  2. Select All (*.*) as the file type.
  3. Browse to the folder where the original file is saved.
  4. Double-click the file that has the .BAK appended to the original file name.
For example, if the original project file Defects.MPJ is saved in C:\My_Files, double-click Defects.MPJ.BAK in C:\My_Files to retrieve the backup.

Disable automatic backup files

  1. Choose Tools > Options > System.
  2. Deselect Save project backup file (.BAK) when opening project.
  3. Click OK.
