What is the noncentrality parameter?

When your sampling distribution is derived from a normal distribution with a nonzero mean, you have a noncentral distribution. The noncentrality parameter helps define your noncentral distribution and represents the degree to which the mean of the sampling distribution of the test statistic departs from its mean when the null is true.
