Which time series analysis should I use?

Minitab offers analyses that you can use depending on whether your data have a trend.

Your data do not have a trend

When your data don't have a trend you can use moving average or single exponential smoothing.
  • Mac: Statistics > Time Series > Moving Average
  • PC: STATISTICS > Forecast > Moving Average
  • Mac: Statistics > Time Series > Single Exponential Smoothing
  • PC: STATISTICS > Forecast > Single Exponential Smoothing

Your data have a trend

When your data have a trend you can use trend analysis or double exponential smoothing.
  • Mac: Statistics > Time Series > Trend Analysis
  • PC: STATISTICS > Forecast > Trend Analysis
  • Mac: Statistics > Time Series > Double Exponential Smoothing
  • PC: STATISTICS > Forecast > Double Exponential Smoothing

Trend analysis fits a single equation to the data, which works well when the trend follows a consistent shape without shifts or reversals. Double exponential smoothing uses a dynamic trend component that works well when there the data have cyclical movements, shifts in the trend, or even reversals in the trend.
