Take a random sample

In the Sample from Columns dialog box, specify the data to sample and the sampling method.

Specify the data and method

Complete the following steps to specify the data to sample and the sampling method:

  1. In Take a sample from the following columns, enter the columns to sample from.
  2. In Number of rows in each sample, enter the sample size.
  3. Select the sampling method:
    • Sample without replacement: Each row can be used only one time.
    • Sample with replacement: Each row can be used multiple times.

Set the base for the random number generator

(Optional) In Base for random number generator, you can specify the starting point for the random number generator by entering an integer that is greater than or equal to 1. When you use the same base number, you get the same sample.

For example, a professor samples 40 rows from a column for use in a classroom exercise. The professor and students each set the base to 1 to generate the same data and thus, the same analysis results.
