Overview for Make Indicator Variables

Use Make Indicator Variables to create indicator variables from a categorical variable. An indicator variable (also called a dummy variable) is a column of 0s and 1s. The value 1 indicates that the observation belongs in that category, and the value 0 means it does not. The most common use of indicator variables is to include categorical information in regression models.

For example, if you enter the column Gender from the following worksheet, Minitab produces one indicator variable for female (Gender_female) and one indicator variable for male (Gender_male). For each observation (row), Minitab stores the value of 1 for true and 0 for false.
