Example of generating patterned numeric data

A food scientist wants to determine the optimal time and temperature for heating a frozen dinner. The scientist generates patterned data to create a worksheet that contains every combination of temperature (350, 375, 425) and time (24, 26, 28, 30).

  1. Open the Generate Patterned Numeric Data dialog box.
    • Mac: Data > Generate Patterned Data > Numeric
    • PC: DATA > Patterned Data > Numeric
  2. From Form of data, select Arbitrary set of numbers.
  3. In Numbers in the base sequence, enter 350 375 425.
  4. In Number of times to list each value, enter 1.
  5. In Number of times to list the whole sequence, enter 4.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click the column name cell and enter Temperature.
  8. Open the Generate Patterned Numeric Data dialog box.
  9. In First number, enter 24.
  10. In Last number, enter 30.
  11. In Size of each step, enter 2.
  12. In Number of times to list each value, enter 3.
  13. In Number of times to list the whole sequence, enter 1.
  14. Click OK.
  15. Click the column name cell and enter Time.

Results

The patterned data are in columns of the worksheet. The engineer can enter the measurement for each factor level combination in the corresponding row of a new column.
