Overview for Inverse Cumulative Distribution Function (ICDF)

The inverse cumulative distribution function (ICDF) gives the value of the variable that is associated with a specific cumulative probability. For example, a reliability engineer wants to determine the time by which specific proportions of components fail. The engineer can use the ICDF to determine the 95th percentile of the failure time distribution.

Where to find this analysis

  • Mac: Statistics > Probability Distributions > Inverse Cumulative Distribution Function
  • PC: STATISTICS > CDF/PDF > Inverse Cumulative Distribution Function

When to use an alternate analysis

If you want to know the cumulative probability for any x-value, use a Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF).
