Example of Bootstrapping for 1-Sample Mean

A chemist for a pharmaceutical company wants to determine the reaction time for a newly developed antacid.

  1. Open the sample data, AntacidReactionTime.MTW.
  2. Open the bootstrapping for 1-sample mean dialog box.
    • Mac: Statistics > Resampling > Bootstrapping for 1-Sample Mean
    • PC: STATISTICS > Resampling > Bootstrapping > 1-Sample Mean
  3. In Sample, enter Time.
  4. On the Options tab, enter 1 in Base for random number generator.

    Using Base for random number generator ensures that your results match the example.

  5. Click OK.

Interpret the results

The 95% CI indicates that the chemist can be 95% confident that the population mean of the reaction time is between approximately 9.9 minutes and 12.9 minutes. The histogram shows that the bootstrap distribution appears to be normal, so the chemist can trust the results.
