Example of Bootstrapping for 1-Sample Function

A chemist for a pharmaceutical company wants to determine the median reaction time for a newly developed antacid.

  1. Open the sample data, AntacidReactionTime.MTW.
  2. Open the bootstrapping for 1-sample function dialog box.
    • Mac: Statistics > Resampling > Bootstrapping for 1-Sample Function
    • PC: STATISTICS > Resampling > Bootstrapping > 1-Sample Function
  3. In Sample, enter Time.
  4. On the Options tab, enter 1 in Base for random number generator.

  5. Click OK.

Interpret the results

The 95% CI indicates that the chemist can be 95% confident that the value of the median reaction time for the population is between approximately 8.8 minutes and 14.8 minutes. However, the histogram shows that the bars are very sparse, making it hard to see the sampling distribution. Because the sampling distribution isn't clear, the confidence interval may be unreliable. The original sample has only 16 data points. To get a reliable confidence interval, the chemist should collect a larger sample and perform the analysis again.
